Toyota, the world’s biggest automaker, has partnered the University of Zimbabwe to launch an internship programme that offers Zimbabwean students an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in automobile technology, business practices and employment opportunities.
UZ Pro-Vice Chancellor, academic affairs and administration, Professor Attwell Mamvuto said the launch of the Toyota Connected Internship Programme marks another milestone in the university’s efforts to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry experience.
“This programme will ensure that our students graduate not only with theoretical knowledge but also with practical skills that will make them highly competitive. It will enable them to proffer real-life solutions to the nation and world at large,” he said.
This internship programme will enhance the country’s research, innovation and industrialisation drive.
“Our collaboration with Toyota Connected aligns perfectly well with our institutional vision of producing graduates who are industry-ready and capable of driving economic transformation,” said Prof Mamvuto.
Speaking at the same event, Toyota Connected Corporation official, Masashi Nomoto said the partnership sought to create an internship programme designed to bridge the academic knowledge and the real world of artificial intelligence innovation.
“The programme provides students with hands-on experience working on AI-driven projects that address real challenges in Zimbabwe and beyond,” he said.
“Toyota makes more than 30 million vehicles all over the world and this exchange programme will give students from the university a chance to learn and change the automobile industry in a way that brings in fresh practical perspectives.”
Japanese AI technology company Pegara, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Japanese Embassy have played a significant role in fostering educational and technological cooperation between Zimbabwe and Japan.
The support has helped to create platforms for knowledge exchange and transfer, research collaboration and student development.
Prospective students are expected to apply for the internship starting from March 10.
The final list of the selected students will be announced on April 15.
Students will be chosen on the basis of the quality of their project proposal.
Toyota was established in 1937 and has become a global leader in the automotive industry.
