THE Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has announced the temporary closure of a section of Old Gwanda Road to allow for critical maintenance works at the Mtshabezi River Bridge.

In a statement, the Ministry advised the motoring public that traffic along the affected stretch will be interrupted on April 12 between 7am and 1pm, as teams move in to remove debris that has accumulated and clogged the bridge.

Authorities said the exercise is part of ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and functionality of key transport infrastructure, particularly following recent rains which may have contributed to the build-up of debris in waterways.

“Motorists are strongly encouraged to exercise patience, caution, and obey all road signs and instructions from traffic controllers during this period,” the Ministry said.

The temporary closure is expected to affect traffic flow along Old Gwanda Road, a key route linking parts of Matabeleland South to Bulawayo, and motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly to avoid delays.

The Ministry emphasised that the maintenance work is necessary to safeguard the structural integrity of the bridge and to prevent potential flooding or damage that could arise from blocked water flow.

“We appreciate the cooperation of the public during this essential infrastructure repair exercise,” the statement read.

The Government has, in recent years, intensified efforts to rehabilitate and maintain road infrastructure across the country under the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme (ERRP), with a focus on improving safety and boosting economic activity through efficient transport networks.

The Ministry expressed regret for any disruption caused and thanked motorists for their understanding as the works are carried out.
