Young miners in Zimbabwe have praised the transformation of the country’s mining sector, saying the changes have allowed them to participate more effectively in the economy.
Payne Farai Kupfuwa, CEO of the Young Miners Federation, said that over the past five years, policies had improved participation in small-scale mining and formalised projects, resulting in growth in production and productivity.
Kupfuwa added that young people were increasingly viewing mining as a business, rather than as a means of getting rich quickly.
“We have seen growth in terms of production and productivity since small scale miners are able to contribute above 60 percent to the economy of the country,” he said.
“l am so glad that people are starting to understand mining as a business not as a get rich quick scheme.
“Historically people used to think that small-scale mining is something that is not professional, but I am happy that time has changed many people’s mindsets.”
The mining sector is one of the country’s chief foreign currency earner and the Government has been providing funds to ensure the sector is adequately financed.
