Transitive and intransitive verbs

The year has come to an end. How sweet it has been especially for those moving from one class to the other. I would like to believe all the affected know what it means to go up the notch higher.

This leads to hard work. Learners have to be mentally ready to learn new work. It is true that thy have to completely forget the work from the previous class. All this work is inter-related.

These days’ education is said to be heritage based and students should come out of school with life skills unlike before when they used to parrot what they read from textbooks.

Nowadays the key concept is on productivity. Learn how to do things than rely on somebody’s expertise. On this vein, to work effectively in a career or job, one must use sentences to communicate with others. Nurses, doctors, architects, cooks — all must have good writing and speaking abilities.

BOOK

Effective writing and speaking depend on the ability to form sentences. Every sentence clearly written in the English language follows basic patterns that can be described in grammatical terms. The key concept here: A sentence is a group of words with two main parts: a complete subject and a complete predicate. Together, these parts express a complete thought.

Here are examples of three complete sentences. In each sentence, the complete subject includes a noun or pronoun that names the person, place or thing that the sentence is about. Each complete predicate includes a verb that tells something about the complete subject. Examples: Complete Subjects: Several pilots from various countries (complete predicates) — have vanished in or the Bermuda Triangle.

As you can see in the following examples, the complete subject or complete predicate can consist of several words or just one word. He (complete subject)/ read about men different careers (complete predicate). The nurse in the green uniform (complete subject) arrived a few minutes ago (complete predicate).

Simple subjects and predicates: Every complete subject and complete predicate contains a word or group of words that is essential to the sentence.

The simple subject is the essential noun, pronoun or group of words acting as a noun that cannot be left out of the complete subject. The simple predicate is the essential verb or verb phrase that cannot be left out of the complete predicate.

Notice that all the other words in the complete subject add details to the simple subject. Similarly, all of the other words in the complete predicate either modify the simple predicate or help it complete the meaning of the sentence.

Examples: Two of his friends (complete subject) studied Law at university (complete predicate). Sick in bed, she (complete subject) had missed her final examination (complete predicate). Note about simple subjects: The simple subject is never the object of a preposition.

Compound subjects: Some sentences have two or more subjects. A compound subject is two or more subjects that have the same verb and are joined by a conjunction such as and or. Compound verbs. Just as a sentence can have a compound subject. It can also have a compound verb.

Complements. In addition to a verb, the complete predicative of a sentence often contains a complement. A complement is a word or group of words that complete the meaning of the predicate of a sentence. It is possible to have a complete sentence with just a subject and verb.

However, most of the sentences you read and write will contain one or more complements that are needed to complete the meaning of a sentence.

Direct objects are generally found after action words. A direct object is a noun or pronoun that receives the action of a transitive action verb. You can determine whether a word is a direct object by asking Whom? Or What? after an action verb.

Transitive and intransitive verbs. An action verb can be intransitive or transitive. An action verb is transitive if it directs action toward someone or something named in the same sentence,
An action verb is intransitive if it does not direct action toward someone or something named in the sentence. The receiver of the action of a transitive verb is called the object of the verb. Intransitive verbs, however, have no objects.

Transitive or Intransitive? Most action verbs can be transitive in one sentence and intransitive in another.

To determine whether a verb is transitive or intransitive, ask Whom? Or What? after the verb. If you can find the answer in the sentence, the verb is transitive. If not, the verb is intransitive.
