Trey NYONI WINS MERSEYSIDE MINI DERBY

Sports Reporter

ZIMBABWEAN footballer Trey Nyoni scored a 96th-minute winner for Liverpool Under-18s to clinch a dramatic 2-1 victory over Everton in Saturday’s mini-derby at the Academy.

Nyoni got the crucial goal deep into stoppage time to seal all three points for the young Reds, who came from behind to win with captain Jayden Danns having instantaneously cancelled out Martin Sherif’s opener.

Sherif and Danns’ goals were scored inside the opening eight minutes of an entertaining contest over which the hosts’ level of control steadily increased to the point of second-half domination.

Several chances came and went for Marc Bridge-Wilkinson’s side, who were denied on numerous occasions by Everton goalkeeper George Pickford, before Nyoni struck decisively.

The Liverpool Echo reviewed Nyoni’s contribution on Saturday.

“For a player who only turned 16 in June, Trey Nyoni is already making his mark at the Kirkby Academy; a 96th-minute winner against Everton, at any level will certainly make people sit up and take note.

“The attacking midfielder has already represented England at U16 level but also has Zimbabwe citizenship through his family and made 13 appearances for Leicester’s U18s team prior to his switch to Merseyside over the summer.

“He was excellent here against Everton as one of as many as a half-dozen 16-year-old’s in the team. After a hat-trick in a pre-season friendly battering of Southend was followed by a goal against Blackburn last week, Nyoni was once more on the scoresheet with a decisive, match-winning contribution in the dying embers.”
