Trial date for activist

Prosper Dembedza

A Harare magistrate has set April 11 as the trial date for activist Talent Rusere, who is facing charges of inciting violence and contravening immigration laws after allegedly residing in Botswana without valid travel documents.

Rusere is accused of violating both the Immigration Act and the Data Protection Act by transmitting data messages intended to incite violence or cause damage to property.

According to the prosecution, led by Mr Rufaro Chonzi, Rusere allegedly left Zimbabwe on an unknown date without proper documentation and is believed to have used an unidentified port of exit.

The court heard that Rusere was deported from Botswana on December 23 through the Ramokwebane Border Post in Plumtree after failing to produce a valid passport or any travel documents.

He was arrested upon his return to Zimbabwe.

In addition to immigration law violations, Rusere is facing charges related to digital communication.

It is alleged that while in Zimbabwe, he created and distributed video messages using a computer or information system.

According to the prosecution, the content of these messages was aimed at inciting violence against individuals or property both within Zimbabwe and across the broader Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.

Rusere recently attracted public attention after claiming to have exposed election rigging in Mozambique.
