TRIANGLE defender Ralph Kawondera and striker Simba “Power” Makoni will play for at least two more seasons at Gibbo after signing two years extension to their contracts until December 2019, the deal could be extended to 2020. The duo’s contracts were due to expire next month but the offers were tabled and they have agreed to stay for another 24 months.
It’s a turn for the better by the administration of chairman Lovemore Matikinyidze who has in the past lost a number of top players to rival teams. Kawondera made 30 starts this season, only three behind veteran defender Guthrie Zhokinyi who is still on 100 percent having completed 33 out of 33 and his coach Taurai Mangwiro believes the versatile Kawondera can continue to pass on his experience to the younger members of the squad.
“He is a vital cog in the team, every coach would like a player like him, he scored eight goals so far despite playing in the defensive position and that’s a return every club wants. Kawondera can fit well in any defensive or midfield positions and that has been an advantage to him and to the team over others hence his many starts,” said Mangwiro.
It’s a different scenario though with Makoni, the bulldozing striker had a very bright start to the season and the team was heavily relying on him to score goals but he was injured and his absence was felt. The striker is recovering well but will only be able to come back next season.
Triangle leadership has shown faith in him and they have offered him a fresh 2 year contract despite being on the sidelines through injury. The striker will definitely continue to add value to the Lowveld-based side with his work rate and goal-scoring prowess. With the 2017 season coming to an end Triangle have more players with contracts expiring as well and a lot more are expected to sign in the coming weeks.
Kudzai Chigwida, the seasoned Courage Denias, Tendai Huwa and Brian Juwayeyi are some of the senior players expected to start talks soon. Triangle’s most consistent player this season — defender Chigwida — held preliminary talks with the club last week but a deal has not been sealed yet.
But if club sources are anything to go by, everything looks on track and the defender who has been pivotal to Triangle’s campaign this season is expected to pen a new deal soon.
