TOUGH battles could be on the cards at Mount Pleasant Swimming Pool tomorrow when Triathlon Zimbabwe host the National Championships.
TZ president Rick Fulton said the event will be used as the final selection event ahead of the South African Championships.“We are hosting the National Championships this Sunday at Mount Pleasant Swimming Pool.  The competition will have adults in the ages 20 years and above.

“There are also going to be junior races for those between 16-and-19 years and youth races for those from 13 years.  Probably, we could have between 100 and 110 athletes coming.

“It’s going to be the final selection event before the South African Championships,” he said.

The South African Championships are set for East London on March 23 and TZ are looking at sending a team.
Serena Rendell is one of the top athletes in the girls 16-17 years age-group after she won the last local competition on February 2.

Rendell will have to beat competition from Helen Mitchell and Skye Davidson while Celia Erlank and Rebecca Duncan could also pose a threat.

“Rendell, Davidson and Mitchell are in the Youth Olympics squad. It’s also going to be quite a competition in the boys section.  I think it’s going to be an interesting battle with Drew Williams likely to have the edge but this is not certain,” said Fulton.

Fungisai Dombotombo has been making a hue impression in the sport recently and could hog the limelight in the men’s section.

The seasoned Martin Mbofana, Morgan Glenn and Ian Brown are expected to take part in the seniors half while James Soper and Sean Collet are some of the top triathletes who could feature in the event.
