Bulawayo is mourning the death of popular social media personality Talent Masuku (30), who died on May 28 while serving a prison sentence.
Known for his street dances, jokes and viral videos, Talent had become a familiar figure in the city, bringing entertainment and energy to many residents.
Masuku was convicted of theft in late 2025 after allegedly stealing US$150 from a woman in Bulawayo’s Central Business District. The court found him guilty after State witnesses supported the complainant’s account, and he was sentenced to prison.
According to relatives, Talent fell ill while in custody and was later admitted to Mpilo Central Hospital, where he died. Family members said they were not informed in time about his deteriorating condition.
News of his death sparked an outpouring of grief on social media, with many residents expressing shock and sadness.
“Bulawayo will never be the same again. Talent suffered, but he still smiled with people every day. This hurts deeply,” said Facebook user Sanelisiwe Moyo.
Another mourner, Prince Ndlovu, wrote: “He was mocked by many, but he was also loved by many. We have lost a soul that became part of the city’s identity.”
Popular X user @Mthabisi_zw posted: “Some people only realise your humanity after you are gone. Rest easy Talent. The streets of Byo will remember you forever.”
A heartbreaking message from Nomfundo Sibanda left many emotional as she said, “I wish somebody had helped him before life swallowed him whole. This pain is unbearable.”
Another resident, Takudzwa Mlambo, wrote, “He made people laugh while fighting battles nobody understood. What a painful ending.”
Others also questioned conditions in prisons and called for transparency surrounding his death, with family members claiming they were informed he had suffered a blood clot in the brain.
