FIFTY-ONE learners from Barham Green Primary School in Bulawayo and a female passerby were injured on Friday afternoon after a swarm of bees attacked pupils at the school.

The injured learners and the woman were rushed to the United Bulawayo Hospitals for treatment.

It is alleged that some learners accidentally disturbed a beehive within the school premises, triggering the attack.

The incident caused panic at the school, with learners running for safety while teachers tried to protect them from the bees.

Bulawayo Chief Fire Officer Mr Mhlangano Moyo confirmed the incident.

“We had a swarm of bees that was so violent. Fifty-one school children were seriously stung together with a female adult passerby who was also seriously injured. The Brigade used fire hose reels to subdue the bees while four ambulances were mobilised to convey the injured to UBH hospital,” said Mr Moyo.

The Bulawayo Fire Brigade attended the scene and managed to contain the bees using fire hose reels.

Learning activities at the school were temporarily disrupted as emergency services responded to the incident.
