With the City of Kings currently gripped by the gqom fever courtesy of South African duo, Distruction Boyz, Bulawayo group Blackdiamond is also looking to ride on the wave with the release of an EP (mini-album) that is set to bring a Bulawayo twist to the house music sub-genre.
The release of Distruction Boyza��s hit single Omunye, taken from their recently released album Gqom is the Future and has shown how popular this new breed of house music is, taking the city by storm at a time when many are already looking for a December anthem.
While the genre is popular in Bulawayo, few seem intent on capitalising on the Durban born craze, something that the trio of Saidi a�?Pro Da Goda�? Manjelo, Shane a�?Sugar Shanea�? Manjelo and Everson a�?DJ Erva�? Madumeja are looking to change.
The eight-track Gqom Life project, which features production from Gobisiqolo producer DJ Nkoh and other top South African Gqom producers like DJ Skhu Masterbeat and Catzico, will be launched on 2 December during a lavish All White themed pool party at Nesbitt Castle.
Hosted by popular city wheel spinners DJ Nospa and Liz, the event will feature exclusive live performances from Blackdiamond and supporting acts such as the Antivirus Crew.
Those lucky enough to find themselves on the guest list will get free copies of the new album along with goodie bags from the eventa��s sponsors.
a�?We named the album Gqom Life because of the heavy influence gqom music has had on the Bulawayo music scene.
When creating this EP we made a point to ensure a quality process at all stages from recording vocals, production, mixing and mastering. We wanted to create an EP which can compete on the international stage and we strongly believe we achieved exactly that with this EP,a�? the group member Pro Da God.
Blackdiamond was founded by two brothers Saidi and Shane Manjelo in 2012. Born and bred in Bulawayo, the brothers spent a few years studying in the United Kingdom and South Africa.
In 2017 they added another member, DJ Erv, in a bid to add a different dynamic to their sound.
