A woman from Mangwe district, her daughter and son-in-law have each been sentenced to 20 months in prison for assaulting the woman’s daughter-in-law whom they accused of spreading rumours about the family.Irene Nyathi (50), Bangisani Ncube (35) and Blessing Mguni (36) all from Macingwane area, Mangwe District, were convicted on their own plea of guilty by Plumtree magistrate, Mr Gideon Ruvedza.
The trio allegedly also beat up the complainant’s husband when he tried to intervene before ordering the man to divorce her.
They were each sentenced to 20 months imprisonment of which six months were suspended for five years on condition that they do not within the period commit an offence of the same nature.
The State’s case as presented by Mr Paul Mpofu is that on 5 September, Nyathi along with her accomplices ambushed the complainant at a bush.
The court heard that the complainant proceeded to Macingwane River around 9am intending to fetch water. On her way back at around 10am she met Miss Nomalanga Ngwenya (19) who is Nyathi’s granddaughter. Miss Ngwenya accused the complainant of spreading lies about the family and went on to call her grandmother who was hiding along with her two accomplices at a nearby bush.
They approached the complainant armed with knobkerries and sticks which they used to assault her resulting in her sustaining injuries. The matter was reported to the police leading to the arrest of the trio.
