THREE candidates yesterday successfully filed their nomination papers to contest the forthcoming Gutu East parliamentary by-election.
The nomination court sat from 10am to 4pm at the Masvingo Magistrates Court where Mr Gift Gonese, an independent candidate, Cde Zvarevashe Masvingise of Zanu PF party and Mr Zivanai Nzvenga of NCA party successfully filed their papers.
ZEC presiding officer Mr Taurai Gavi said there will be a by-election to choose the new legislator for Gutu East constituency after more than one candidate successfully filed papers.
The by-election was necessitated by the expulsion of Mr Benjamin Ganyiwa from Zanu PF.
Mr Ganyiwa was elected the Gutu East National Assembly representative in the 2023 harmonised elections but was sacked from the party, which triggered a by-election as the seat had become vacant.
Cde Masvingise of Zanu PF vowed to help the party retain the seat in the coming by-election.
“I want to assure our First Secretary and President Cde Dr ED Mnangagwa that come by-election day, I will deliver the parliamentary seat with a very huge margin,’’ said Cde Masvingise.
He said the Second Republic’s people-oriented projects had made his job easier as there were a lot of game-changing projects being rolled out by the Zanu PF government that were positively impacting on people’s lives.
Mr Gonese promised sweeping internet connectivity mainly targeting schools in Gutu East ahead of the election.
“We will soon embark on a programme to make sure all schools have internet connectivity in Gutu East and we already have Star link kits that we want to distribute to schools in the constituency.
“We also want all dip tanks to be operational while farmers will get affordable loans to expand their agricultural activities,’’ said Mr Gonese.
