The three players will have an opportunity to compete with some of Africa’s best juniors in a tournament that caters for the Under-14 and Under- 16 and which will run from June 10 to 15. It will feature players from the top five countries in Africa that include South Africa, Madagascar, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia.
Machisa and Bhunu were invited by the International Tennis Federation following a good performances at the Africa Junior Championships in Kenya in April.
They will be joined by Kaome who qualified for the event via play-offs as the team is supposed to be made up of three players because they will also have to compete in the doubles.
But it is the impending opportunity to test their pedigree among some of the best junior players in Africa and on the globe that has left the teenage girls in dreamland. Machisa said she is excited about the invitation and is looking forward to the tournament.
“It’s a great opportunity for me. I am going to get more competition from the North African countries. I am so excited about this. I am just hoping to play the best I can,” said Machisa.
The 14-year-old, who recently won the Zimbabwe Closed girls Under-18 held at Harare Sports Club, said she hopes the exposure will stand her in good stead when she competes with the best in Tunisia.
“Playing at the tournament has great opportunities like in terms of getting a scholarship and it can also improve my career because there is more exposure. Sometimes there were ups and downs but it’s because I didn’t give up and my parents have been very supportive. I just hope for the best,” said Machisa.
