But yesterday, the organisers of the tournament, which is back after a three-year absence, said this year’s edition will have a package of over R1 million.
There would also be individuals prizes for categories such as Player of the Tournament, Top Goalscorer and Top Goalkeeper.
In a press release, Cosafa organisers said they would also reward teams that would have scored most of the goals in the group stages.
“The winning country will go home with R500 000, while the runners-up in the final will receive R250 000. The team that collects the bronze medal will earn R150 000.
“There will also be a plate competition this year for the losing quarter-finalists, with the winner of that taking home R100 000.
“Cosafa are also hoping to promote exciting, attacking football for fans, and will give two R30 000 prizes to the nations who score the most goals in the pool stages, ensuring there will be no ‘dead rubbers’ in the competition.
“There will also be prizes for Player of the Tournament, Top Goalscorer and Top Goalkeeper, with each of these amounting to R10 000,” read the statement.
The competition which begins on July 6 up to 20 in three towns — Lusaka, Ndola and Kitwe — will see 12 countries from the region and two guests competing.
Equatorial Guinea and Kenya have been invited as the guests for this edition.
