A local truck driver was taken to the Maintenance Court by his ex-wife for the upkeep of their two children.
Ratidzo Chikwani demanded US$400 from her ex-husband, Edward Zvapero, but he made no offer. “She is not staying with the children; they stay with my mother, so I send the money directly to my mother.
“When l buy clothes for the children and give her, she burns them saying my children do not wear clothes bought by another woman,” said Edward.
But Ratidzo said she is the one staying with the children. “He left us five years ago. When it comes to his salary, I cannot confirm how much he earns, but when we were still together, he was earning US$400.
” I just want him to maintain his children,” she said. Magistrate Ayanda Dhlamini asked him why he was lying about where the children are staying after his ex-wife provided proof that she stays with them.
“She only took one child by force this year,” replied Edward.
The magistrate told Edward that the court only works with evidence.
Edward was ordered to pay US$60 plus school fees and buy uniforms twice a year.
