Trusting the process of spiritual growth

“The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.” — Judges 6:12

One of the greatest miracles in the life of a believer is not simply the case when God changes your name, but when you begin to believe the name He has given you.

Many people receive a prophetic word, a promise or a new identity from God, yet they continue living as though nothing has changed. They hear God’s declaration, but they struggle to see themselves the way the Almighty sees them.

This was true of Gideon. When God found him hiding in a winepress out of fear of the oppression of the Midianites, He called him a mighty warrior.

Gideon did not look like a warrior, act like a warrior or feel like a warrior.

Yet God spoke to him according to his destiny and not according to his present condition. God saw the leader Gideon would become long before Gideon saw it himself. The same is true for us.

God often calls us by what we are becoming rather than by what we currently are. Before Abraham had a son, God called him the father of many nations. Before Peter became a strong leader, Jesus called him a rock.

God changes our name first and then leads us into the process of becoming what He has declared.

The first challenge after a name change is overcoming an old mindset.

When Gideon heard God’s word, he immediately focused on his weaknesses.

He reminded God that his family was the weakest and that he was the least important person in his household.

Gideon saw limitations where God saw potential. Many believers face the same struggle today. God says they are blessed, but they still think they are limited. God says they are chosen, but they continue to feel rejected. God says they are victorious, but they still think like victims.

A changed identity requires a renewed mind. Romans 12:2 teaches that transformation comes through the renewing of our minds.

We cannot step into a new season while holding onto old ways of thinking.

A new identity also requires a new way of speaking. Gideon kept speaking weakness while God kept speaking strength.

Many people sabotage their growth by continuing to speak negatively about themselves and their future.

If God has declared victory over your life, you cannot continually confess defeat. If God has called you blessed, you cannot constantly speak lack and failure.

Our words reveal what we believe.

Faith is choosing to agree with what God says even when circumstances seem different. The language of the old person cannot sustain the destiny of the new person. Beyond our thinking and speaking, our actions must also reflect our identity.

God did not call Gideon a mighty warrior so that he could remain hidden forever. Eventually, Gideon had to step out in faith and lead Israel into battle. Throughout Scripture, every person who received a calling had to act on it. Abraham left his homeland.

Moses confronted Pharaoh.

Peter stepped out of the boat.

The evidence that we believe God’s word is found in our obedience.

At some point, faith must move beyond words and become action.

Finally, we must remember that growth is a process. Gideon did not become a mighty warrior overnight. There were fears to overcome, lessons to learn and victories to win. In the same way, spiritual growth takes time.

The fact that you are still developing does not mean God was wrong about you. It simply means you are still growing.

Today, God is calling you to embrace the identity He has spoken over your life.

Stop defining yourself by past failures, old labels and past experiences. Believe what God says about you. Speak what God says about you. Live according to what God says about you.

The God who changed your name will also give you the grace to grow into it.

Closing prayer

Father, thank You for the new identity You have given us in Christ. Help us to renew our minds, align our words with Your promises and walk in obedience to Your calling. Give us grace to grow into everything You have declared about our lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
