Long before he ever imagined that his destiny would be in the fashion industry, young designer Ishmael Tsakatsa (22) never visualised that he would one day be standing on the podium to receive the highly esteemed 2014 Zimbabwe Designer of the Year award.
Ishmael’s stars were shining last Saturday night when his fashion label Zargue’sia was the audience and crowd’s favourite at the 2014 edition of the Zimbabwe Fashion Week showcasing his talent.
The University of Zimbabwe final year Physiotherapy student at the College of Health Sciences was all by himself when he emerged top of the class with his crisp, clean Visions Collection in a maroon, white and black theme.
It was Ishmael’s third romance with the Zim Fashion Week after winning the Emerging Designer of the Year award last year.
The award now opens opportunities for his outfits to be featured in local fashion houses like Edgars Stores and other boutiques.
The youthful designer was naturally ecstatic about his latest feat saying it was reflecting his growth as a designer and the opening up of new opportunities.
“I am quite excited about this award and I am hoping that next year I will be able to showcase my collection outside Zimbabwe.
“It is my desire to be able to dress some of the local and international celebrities.”
The awards ceremony was held in a big marquee outside the Harare City Library was a glamorous affair that drew a host of Harare’s fashionistas who came out dressed to kill.
Multiple-award winning band Mokoomba, and hip hoppers MMT and Karizma provided the entertainment.
Ameera Murad Ameer, was named blogger of the year for her fresh fashion perspective on her blog, Just Mimi.
Creative and experimental photographer Michelle Fortmann, was named photographer of the year.
Ndau Collection won Accessories Designer of the Year for the second year running.
The Male Model of the Year Award went to Mervyn Uahupirapi of Namibia. The tall Mervyn had women screaming and cheering for him throughout the fashion week. Jordyn Miller was named Female Model of the Year.
Other awards were Style Icon of the Year: Craig Zoowie, Young Designer of the Year: Natsai Mujuru and Emerging Designer of the Year: Kuda Chihungwa.
