IT’S going to be fireworks this Saturday at Manor Hotel as Bulawayo’s best traditional dance crews go head-to-head in the Chibuku Neshamwari provincial finals — and the drums are already rumbling.

Ten energetic groups are set to battle it out in a fierce display of rhythm, tradition, and flair for a spot at the national finals in Mutare on July 19. Expect foot-stomping performances of Hosana, Isitshikitsha, Bira Jake, Mzansi, and the ever-captivating Amabhiza.

The groups bringing the heat include Thandanani Women’s Ensemble, Iluba Lemvelo, Bambanani Traditional Dance, Khami Prison, Mthwakazi KaNdaba, Isizwe Sabatsha, Jaiva Arts Centre, Sekunjalo Ma Africa, Vuka Mthwakazi, and Ulenje Dance Troupe.

Bulawayo provincial manager for the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe, Cleopatra Dube, said it’s all systems go and urged the city to show up in numbers.

“We are ready. Let’s come together to celebrate our culture and support our talented performers,” she said.

Sekusile Dance Group

Meanwhile, Sekusile Dance Group from Matabeleland South has already booked their place at the nationals after outshining tough rivals like Ben Arinoti How Mine and Blanket Mine Beni.

Speaking with passion, Sekusile chairman Gabriel Dambo said: “It’s been years since Mat South last lifted the national title. We’re hungry for glory and working hard to bring it home.”

Dambo emphasised that Isitshikitsha is at the heart of their identity.

“Through our dance, we are telling our story. This is more than a competition — it’s about preserving who we are.”

Formed in 2010 and made up of 15 dancers, Sekusile is fired up to shake the stage and make a lasting impression on the judges and fans alike.

At the nationals, they’ll face top groups like Goromonzi Arts (Mash East), Jeketera Renyaungwe (Masvingo), Imvimbi Arts (Mat North), Katawa Dance Group (Mash West), Gure Unde (Midlands), and hosts Semvumba Arts Ensemble (Manicaland).

With US$15 000 up for grabs for the champs and big cash prizes for second and third place, the stakes have never been higher.

Let the drums talk!
