A 26-year-old Tsholotsho man was allegedly axed to death by a gang of more than 10 assailants in a brutal attack that has left his family and the wider Dzontsi Village community in shock.

Previous Ncube was killed on Wednesday evening outside Silandaphoba Business Centre, a few kilometres from his home village, in what villagers described as a savage and merciless assault.

According to witnesses, the gang descended on Ncube and repeatedly attacked him with axes before fleeing from the scene. The motive for the killing remains unclear.

Villagers said some of the suspects allegedly recorded the attack on their mobile phones while openly declaring their intention to kill the victim.

The brazen attack occurred despite Sipepa Police Station being located about three kilometres from the crime scene.

Speaking from his hospital bed at Tsholotsho District Hospital, Ncube’s younger brother, Prince, said he was injured while trying to rescue his sibling.

“They were so vicious and openly declaring that they would kill him. I was also attacked while trying to save my brother, who was now lying helpless on the ground,” said Prince.

The killing has sent shockwaves through the usually peaceful community, with villagers calling for justice and the speedy arrest of all those involved.

Residents commended police for their swift response, which reportedly resulted in the arrest of three suspects shortly after the incident.

Investigations are continuing, with police understood to be searching for several other suspects believed to have gone into hiding.

Ncube’s death has left his family devastated, with villagers describing him as a young man whose life was cut short in a senseless act of violence.

The community is expected to gather over the coming days to mourn his death as calls intensify for all those responsible to be brought before the courts.

Police had not yet issued an official statement on the matter by the time of going to print.
