Dubbed “The Clash of the Titans”, the month-end gig will see two of Zimbabwe’s high-profile musicians exchanging notes before taking to the stage in what appears to be a rare and must-attend gig.
Affectionately known to his legion of fans as Extrabasso, Macheso – who has become a father again after his second wife Tafadzwa was blessed with a bouncing baby boy – is no doubt on cloud nine.
And to help celebrate his newly born bambino, Extrabasso has fully recharged his batteries and is ready to deliver his best in song and dance.
Besides the razzmatazz on the stage, Extrabasso who leads the Orchestra Mberikwazvo has a surprise package for fans who will attend tonight’s gig.
“There is going to be lots of new stuff from dance to music which will be part of the surprise package,” Jethro Machanja, the assistant manager of the group, said.
Extrabasso has shown that he is the king of sungura music in Zimbabwe by winning several awards as the best stage performer.
He has proved himself as a class act with performances that have kept crowds on their feet every time he has taken to the stage.
Both Extrabasso and Mtukudzi are not newcomers when it comes to staging polished acts and the show has been long overdue for many a music lover.
Mtukudzi, or simply Tuku, has been one of the most consistent musicians in Zimbabwe and has released 60 albums to date.
The United Nations recently appointed him Goodwill Ambassador for championing children’s rights through song.
Songs such as “Street Kids” and “Hazvireve Rudo Handina” are some of the many songs that focus on the plight of children.
The Kora Award winner is currently riding high with his latest album “Abiangu” that has received rave reviews in the media.
Shepherd Mutamba, Tuku’s publicist, said the album was selling like hot cakes.
Mutamba, however, said fans should expect a sterling performance from the musician many now describe as the granddad of Zimbabwean music.
Dendera rookie Tryson Chimbetu will support Tuku and Macheso at the show.
Tryson is expected to serenade revellers down memory lane belting out some of the tunes that were done by the late dendera king, Simon “Chopper” Chimbetu.
The young artiste is a joy to watch on stage and most of his performances leave fans clamouring for more.
