Tuku to serenade fans at Jazz 105

his few remaining shows in Zimbabwe before he leaves for a whirlwind tour lasting several weeks that will see him perform in the United Kingdom with Chimurenga maestro Thomas Mapfumo.

Tuku’s gig at the Jazz 105 tomorrow will be an important occasion as it promises to be a massive midweek party. However, the seasoned musician will not be playing with the full band, but will have a trio performance, in a move that is expected to bring a different feel and verve to the night.

Tuku’s efforts on the night will be ably complemented by Munya Mataruse and the Dembo Brothers, who appear to be on the mission to revamp their brand in light of fierce competition from other emerging artistes. Tomorrow’s show will afford them an opportunity to market their brand, while learning one or two tricks from Tuku, a seasoned international brand. With a large discography from their late father’s archives and a few songs from their new album, the Dembo Brothers will no doubt give out their best, while taking advantage of performing with a superstar.

Tuku who turned 60 last year has almost become like an institution, highly revered for both his music and his persona.
Touted as one of the best musicians in the league of Fela Kuti, Hugh Masekela and Ismael Lo, Tuku has got a distinct and unique beat that has found favour with thousands of music fans across the globe. His live performances are a marvel to watch and he always makes sure to give a polished performance, whether it’s a trio, quartet or a full band that would be supporting him.

One thing that you can’t take away from Tuku is his ability to read the crowd’s mood, as attested by the time he switches from one song to the other, if he senses that the response is not warm.

Unlike other artistes who are in the habit of overplaying their current hit songs, Tuku makes it a point to mix his current and yesteryear hits at most of his shows, something that his fans really adore about him.

He can take you down memory lane and play 20-year-old music like “Mbombera”, “Bvongodza Muto”, “Dzoka Uyamwe”, “Rova Ngoma Mutavara”, and immediately switches to the current hit “Wanditsvata” and still be able to maintain the same morale.

With more than 50 albums to his name and several national and international accolades that he has won for his sterling work, he continues to give
top-notch performances, something that has made him a reputable brand.
