Tuku up for massive gig

Dubbed “Sing Along Gig”, the concert will feature other heavy hitters in the mould of Alick Macheso, Jah Prayzah and Suluman Chimbetu.

Those who know will tell you that a gig of this magnitude is a must-attend since it brings together all the big names currently receiving massive airplay on radio as well as in pubs and clubs dotted around Zimbabwe.

Presented by Partson Chimbodza of Chipaz Promotions, the beauty of this gig is that as much as it is quality entertainment, all the performing aristes have something new on the market.

Mtukudzi, or simply Tuku, is riding high with his latest album “Sarawoga”, Suluman’s “Syllabus” is still sounding fresh, Macheso released his album “Kwatakabva Mitunhu (Kure Kwekure)” and Jah Prayzah recently launched “Tsviriyo”.

Oh! Another thing is the line-up features different elements if you are into sungura then Macheso or Extrabasso will give it to you, if you are into dendera it doesn’t come any better than Sulu and katekwe fans should expect a treat from the man himself – Tuku.

Maybe I could be wrong but I still think katekwe took a different dimension ever since Tuku decided to replace keyboards with marimba and mbira.
If you think I am wrong why don’t you go back and listen to the albums “Rudaviro” and “Dairai”. On those two albums you will feel the seductive sound of marimba played by

Charles Chipanga. Up to now I still think that Tuku music had taken a new direction for the better and it was distinctively Zimbabwean.
Then you have Jah Prayzah whose music cannot be pigeonholed for one reason or the other. We know how Jah Prayzah does it when he features on a track he brings a different flair which is easy to follow perhaps this is why the gig has been dubbed sing along.

If you listen to the track he features Tuku called “Sisiriya” then you know what good music sounds like. It appears whatever Tuku touches turns to gold. Remember the song “Kata” which he did alongside Sulu?

When Jah Prayzah released the track “Gochi Gochie” many people dismissed it as a radio commercial for a butchery in Warren Park D.
Well, that was surprising considering that even the makers of Aston Martin luxury vehicles at one point asked rapper Rick Ross to record a song for their DB9 model and the track went platinum just like that.

Whether “Gochi Gochie” was an advert or not you cannot take away the fact that it’s a beautiful sing- along tune.
Oddly enough, of the four artistes, Extrabasso is the only one who has not done any duets with any of the singers in the line-up. Of course, the “Macharangwanda” singer has collaborated with the likes of Energy Mutodi, the late Beater Mangethe and more recently Olla Juru, but he is yet to record with Jah, Sulu or Tuku. Maybe in future we are going to see musicians cutting across genres to record music not just locally but beyond borders.

According to Chimbodza, said the gig was aimed at providing feel good music to fans without experimenting with new faces.
The gig is expected to generate a lot of heat from start to finish. “Whoever opens the show will set the bar high for other performers and that is what fans are going to enjoy most,” Chimbodza said.
