Turks young no more

Forget Rod Stewart and his “Young Turks” mantra in his 1981 hit.

The Turks have since aged and aged well while they are at it.

And tomorrow, the Turkish Embassy in Harare will celebrate just that when the recognise 95 years of the Turkish state as we know it today.

“We are very excited to be celebrating our national day,” said the Turkish Ambassador to Zimbabwe HE Hakan Kivanc.

It lasts 35 hours, starting each year at 1:00 pm on October 28. The holiday commemorates the events of October 29, 1923, when Mustafa Kemal declared that Turkey was henceforth a republic.

A lot of cultural dishes are lined up for the event which draws together invited guests from the diplomatic community, political leadership and other notables in society who will celebrate alongside their Turkish counterparts.
