MATABELELAND Tuskers went down by an innings and 40 runs to Mountaineers on the last day of the four-day Logan Cup cricket competition at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo yesterday.In response to Mountaineers’ first innings score of 435 runs, Tuskers were bundled out for 279 runs in their first innings which meant they had to follow on and in their second innings they could only manage 116 runs to surrender the match in three-and-a-half days. The match went into its final day with the Bulawayo lads on 89 for the loss of four wickets, still needing 67 runs to make Mountaineers bat again.
The home side did not achieve much success with the bat, with their resistance lasting only 20.4 overs which was played for an hour and 18 minutes.
Brian Chari had the highest contribution for Tuskers in their second innings with 42 runs with the rest of the batsmen not even passing 20 runs.
Left arm spinner Wellington Masakadza was the most outstanding bowler for Mountaineers with three wickets for 26 runs in 23 overs in the Tuskers second innings, not conceding a run in 10 of those overs to add to the five wickets he collected in the first innings.
Medium pace bowler Donald Tiripano also had three wickets, those wickets coming at the expense of 27 runs in 16 overs, six of those overs being maidens. Off spinner Tapiwa Mufudza claimed two wickets while left arm seamer Prosper Tsvanhu had one wicket.
Tuskers leave for Kwekwe tomorrow for a Pro50 Championship fixture against Midwest Rhinos on Sunday at Kwekwe Sports Club with the teams meeting in a Logan Cup match starting at the same venue on Tuesday.
Mountaineers head off to Masvingo where they meet Southern Rocks in a 50 overs match on Sunday at Masvingo Sports Club before the two teams clash in a four-day fixture at the same venue from Tuesday.
