The diamond mining company is not new to sport as they are bankrolling women’s soccer and last month held a golf tournament. The company is among those that are ploughing back profits to benefit communities that are the owners of the resources that they are exploiting.
Marange Resources (Pvt) Ltd will be Castle Logan Cup winners’ main sponsor Chronicle Sport has learnt.
Apart from claiming the most coveted silverware in domestic cricket, Matabeleland Tuskers were voted as the Best Franchise Team, Best Administered Franchise and their coach Dave Houghton was voted the Best Coach.
Their high ride might have attracted the attention of the mining company hence the sponsorship.
Though Matabeleland Tuskers Cricket Franchise’s chief executive officer Stanley Staddon could not be drawn into commenting about their partnership with Marange Resources, emails which he has been sending out have their logo which reads: “Matabeleland Tuskers Cricket Franchise, proudly sponsored by Marange Resources”.
“I cannot comment on what you are asking. All I can tell you is that we will soon be unveiling our sponsors. The sponsor that I know is Old Mutual which all franchises are benefiting from,” said Staddon.
In the past two seasons, Matabeleland Tuskers’ main sponsors were Metropolitan Bank.
In a telephone interview yesterday, Marange Resources chief executive Obed Dube could neither confirm nor deny the development before referring this reporter to their human resources executive only identified as Shumba.
“That issue (Matabeleland Tuskers sponsorship) is being handled by Shumba, talk to Shumba he will assist you,” said Dube.
Shumba said he had been away and would make the information available this morning.
However, Matabeleland Tuskers cricket Franchise is likely to unveil their sponsor at tonight’s dinner where Staddon and his team will make presentations to their sponsors.
Being main sponsors, Marange Resources’ package might include Matabeleland Tuskers Cricket Franchise full kit comprising travelling attire, tracksuits, training kits, home and away playing strips.
Marange Resources will be expected to take care of the team’s travelling and home match expenses.
The coming in of Marange Resources might enable the team to retain most of its players who won the Castle Logan Cup last season.
In February, Marange Resources unveiled an estimated $3 million sponsorship package for women’s soccer and the mining company bankrolled the Marange Pro-am tournament to the tune of $30 000, making it one of the most lucrative tournaments on the Zambezi Tour circuit.
