Football fraternity to observe minute of silence for late VP Joshua Nkomo

The late VP Nkomo was a keen follower of football and at one time was patron of junior football in the country.

“As a family of football we will observe a minute of silence in honour of the late Father Zimbabwe who is indeed founder of our national politics that led to the independence of this country. He is one of Zimbabwe’s illustrious sons who helped create the prevailing non- racial, non-tribal society that Zimbabwe is today,” said Zifa chief executive officer Jonathan Mashingaidze.

He said the late VP Nkomo did a lot in developing community clubs into organised football.

“Dynamos are playing a continental match on Sunday which is not under our jurisdiction but we will still engage the relevant authorities whom I am sure will understand the importance of 1 July to all Zimbabweans and even outside our borders, said Mashingaidze.

The late Father Zimbabwe who was opposed to tribalism, ordered two of the biggest clubs in Bulawayo, Matabeleland Highlanders and Mashonaland United to drop the names with tribal connotations.

This resulted in the birth of Highlanders and Zimbabwe Saints.
