SUNGURA musician and Samaita Express frontman, Taruvinga “Sugar Sugar” Manjokota, says he has no tangible rewards for the 27 years he has spent entertaining his fans.
He is famed for the hit song, ‘Mairosi.’
Sugar Sugar has been around for some time now and released his first album ‘Zviri Mukati,’ in 2005.
The sungura artist said despite doing well in the past 27 years, he has not raised enough money even to buy a car.
Sugar Sugar spent four years working in South Africa.“I have been in this industry for 27 years, providing you with music, entertainment, and memories,” he said.
“It’s time for you to show your appreciation by supporting me financially.
“The years that I have been in this industry, there’s nothing to show for it. It’s now time for people who listen to my music to give me money.
“I need just a token of appreciation for the music I’ve provided you over the years.
“I don’t have enough equipment to even record music.”
He added:
“People believed that I was dead but I am still here, making music.
“I relocated to South Africa from 2018 to 2023 for a better life, but COVID-19 didn’t help, it made everything worse.”
Sugar Sugar believes greedy promoters benefited immensely from his work and then dumped him when the chips were down.
“Promoters are some of the people who should help us but, in my case, it is different as they benefited from me and dumped me in the process.”
The musician, who is set to launch a new album “Chimbondionaiwo” on May 29, is desperately trying to bring back the good old days.
The album has seven tracks.
