TWO people died on the spot while 16 others were seriously injured when the driver of a commuter omnibus they were travelling in failed to negotiate a curve resulting in the vehicle veering off the road and overturning.
Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the accident occurred yesterday at about 6.30am at the 225km peg along the Kwekwe-Gweru road near Kwekwe River.
Insp Mahoko said the Gweru-bound Nissan Caravan, which was being driven by Knowledge Mgauri, had 17 people on board.
“On approaching the 225km peg along the Harare-Gweru road, the driver of the kombi, Knowledge Mgauri failed to negotiate a curve and lost control of the vehicle. It veered off the road and overturned killing two people on the spot,” said Insp Mahoko.
He said the injured were rushed to Kwekwe District Hospital where their condition was said to be critical.
“Preliminary investigations show that the driver of the kombi was speeding. We would like to take this opportunity to urge motorists to exercise extreme caution and stick to stipulated speed limits when travelling especially during this festive season where we expect large volumes of traffic,” said Insp Mahoko.
