TWO Harare men who were arrested after being found in illegal possession of TelOne cables weighing 15kg have been jailed for 10 years each.
The two are Tinotenda Nyajichi (20) of 604A Dzivarasekwa, Harare and Pilot Muzira (27) of 321B Dzivarasekwa, Harare, who were recently arrested for contravening section 89(4) (C) of the Postal and Telecommunication Act, Chapter 12:05, which deals with receiving or taking possession of any Telecommunication Infrastructure material without a permit”.
Criminal Investigations Department (CID) deputy spokesperson, Detective Assistant Inspector Merylin Muriro, said on April 14, 2026, the two went to Kuwadzana 5, Harare and proceeded to a TelOne pole and cut cables weighing 15kg before loading them into two sacks.
“An alert member of the public alerted Detectives from CID Minerals, Flora and Fauna, who swiftly reacted to the information, leading to the arrest of the two and the subsequent recovery of the loot,” she said.
“On April 21 2026, the two were arraigned at Harare Magistrates Court before Magistrate Mr Noel Mupeiwa, while Public Prosecutor Ms Mandirasa Chigumira was representing the State. After a full trial, the duo was convicted and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment each.”
She warned the public against vandalising or interfering with public utilities and infrastructure.
“Such acts impact negatively on the country’s development and is tantamount to economic sabotage,” she said.
