Two up for stealing 200 cellphones

Police have arrested two suspected thieves who last year broke into a Harare shop and stole 200 cellphones valued at US$30 000.

The two appeared at Rotten Row Magistrates Court where they were remanded in custody.

Criminal Investigations Department (CID) spokesperson, Detective Inspector Rachel Muteweri said: “Berenic Njinga (24) and Oniel Chirisa (25), acting in connivance, broke into the cellphone shop on December 28 and got away with 200 cellphones.

“Their luck ran out on March 12, 2025, when Detectives from CID Stores and Business in Harare heard that the two were behind the commission of the crime. A manhunt was launched, resulting in the arrest of Njinga.”

After his arrest, Njinga implicated Chirisa and he was subsequently arrested on March 13, 2025.

A total of 150 cellphones valued at $22 500 were recovered.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police continues to implore members of the public to reinforce security measures at their premises to avoid falling prey to criminals,” Detective Inspector Muteweri said.

He also thanked members of the public for providing credible information that led to the arrest of the accused persons.
