TWO women from West Nicholson drowned while trying to cross a flooded Vungure River last Wednesday.
Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Christopher Ngwenya identified the women as Gladys Makhesa, age not given, of Siyoka area in Beitbridge and Ratidzo Sibanda, 30 of Tshabezi area in West Nicholson.
“I confirm that two women drowned when they attempted to cross the flooded Vungure River. The body of Sibanda was found trapped by stones on the river bank about 1km from the crossing point while
Makhesa’s body was located a further kilometre away, trapped by shrubs. The two bodies were retrieved by locals,” he said.
Asst Insp Ngwenya said the matter was reported to the police who then attended the scene.
He said the bodies were taken to Gwanda Provincial Hospital for postmortem.
It is understood the two women were returning from their work at Reata Irrigation Compound and tried to cross the flooded river around 5.30PM.
Fellow workmates conducted a search after seeing that the pair did not report for duty as expected and their bodies were found along the river bank.
Asst Insp Ngwenya urged members of the public to desist from crossing flooded rivers to avoid unnecessary loss of lives.
