A man has been sentenced to two years in prison for stealing cellphones valued at over US$15 000 from a shop owned by Vice President Constantino Chiwenga’s wife, Miniyothabo Baloyi Chiwenga.
Succeed Mukaro pleaded guilty to the charges of unlawful entry.
During the sentencing, presiding magistrate Mrs Ethel Chichera initially imposed a five-year sentence but suspended two years on the condition of good behaviour.
An additional year was set aside contingent upon restitution.
The prosecution, represented by Ms Polite Chikiwa, presented evidence indicating that on May 31 at around 3:00pm, Ossie Shone, the supervisor of the shop in question, secured the property by closing all windows and locking the door before leaving for the day.
Later that evening at approximately 7:10pm, Mukaro executed his plan to break into the shop.
He smashed the front glass wall, creating a hole through which he gained entry and stole cellphones worth US$15 915.
On June 3, 2025, detectives received a tip-off about suspected stolen cellphones being sold at Ximex Mall.
They located Blessed Luciano, a cellphone dealer, who had purchased some of the stolen phones from Isaac Craig Chaza.
Further investigations revealed that Chaza had received the phones from Mukaro.
Posing as potential buyers, detectives lured Chaza to Ximex Mall, where they recovered additional stolen phones.
Following this, Mukaro was arrested at Joina City Mall while accompanied by his brother, Sydney. More stolen phones were recovered from Mukaro.
Police conducted further investigations and recovered more phones from Mukaro’s residence in Domboshava.
Fingerprint analysis confirmed Mukaro’s presence at the crime scene.
