TWO Harare youths have each been jailed an effective six months in the rehabilation prison at Chikurubi after they were separately found in possession of dangerous drugs.
Sharma John (20) and Francisca Mangori Maduwadzai (21) appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court facing charges of unlawful possession of crystal meth.
John appeared in court after he was arrested on Saturday at around 9 am at ZRP Dzivarasekwa. A search conducted on him at the police station led to the recovery of a sachet containing the drug, which was stashed in the back of a pair of shorts he was wearing.
Police also recovered a U-shaped bulb, which is used as an apparatus for preparing the drug for smoking.
In a separate but similar case, Maduwadzai also appeared before magistrate Lisa Mutendereki after police officers acting on a tip-off approached her at her residence in Dzivarasekwa.
A search carried out in her room led to the recovery of one sachet of crystal meth from her clothes hanging inside the room.
In mitigation, she told the court that she has been hooked on the drug since 2018 despite several efforts to stop.
The recovered drugs in both cases were seized and produced in court as exhibits.
Both were convicted and each sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment, of which three months were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour when they leave prison so if they reoffend the three months is added to the new sentence.
