TWO Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) rangers were seriously injured after being attacked by a herd of elephants in the Sengwa-Chirisa Safari Area.
The rangers were responding to a report of a snared buffalo believed to be a potential threat to surrounding communities when they encountered a herd of elephants with calves.
The elephants charged, forcing the officers to flee in different directions.
ZimParks spokesperson Mr Tinashe Farawo confirmed the incident.
“One of the rangers suffered a broken arm while fleeing, while the other was gored by one of the elephants and sustained abdominal wounds, along with fractures to his arm and leg,” he said.
Mr Farawo said a helicopter was dispatched to evacuate the injured rangers to Harare for emergency medical treatment.
The incident, he said, highlights dangers faced by rangers in the field.
“These brave individuals put their lives on the line to protect both wildlife and the communities living around conservation areas.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured rangers and their families,” said.
The attack comes amid ongoing efforts by ZimParks to address growing human-wildlife conflict in protected areas, where encounters between animals and people remain a serious concern.
