The Ministry of Health and Child Care is actively promoting hygiene practices to combat the spread of typhoid fever and influenza, as new cases have emerged over the past few days.

Typhoid fever is a life-threatening infection caused by the bacteria. It usually spreads through contaminated food or water.

Influenza, also called flu, is an infection of the nose, throat and sometimes the lungs.

In a statement, the Ministry of Health and Child Care reported 13 new suspected cases of typhoid fever in Harare Province.

The Ministry advises that to combat typhoid, people should only consume uncontaminated food and potable water, as well as maintaining good sanitation.

In combating influenza, frequent handwashing with soap and clean water is recommended, as well as observing physical distancing, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home when experiencing flu-like symptoms.

Vaccination is also a key preventive measure against influenza.
