TENNIS Zimbabwe have rolled out an ambitious programme to expand the number of junior tournaments they hold throughout the country as part of efforts to promote development of the game in all the provinces. After a meeting held on Saturday at Harare Sports Club between the new TZ executive led by Regis Bhunu and the board of control, the provinces are expected to hold more tournaments for the Under-10s which would be staged separately from the Under-12 to Under-18 events as the national association hopes to improve their developmental projects at grassroots level.
The Under-10 players use three balls — the red ball, orange ball and green ball which were developed to make it easier for beginners. The balls bounce much lower and are slower and easy to hit.
The programme was introduced by ITF last year and Zimbabwe has been having tournaments for the Under-10s using these balls recommended by the international federation in an effort to encourage more young players to participate in tennis.
TZ administrator Cliff Nhokwara said the meeting went on well with the provincial chairpersons presenting their reports for the period of January to end of July and how they intend to embrace the junior developmental programmes.
