TZ to hold meeting

TENNIS Zimbabwe will tomorrow hold a meeting at the Harare Sports Club to discuss various issues concerning the development of the sport around the country.
The meeting will see the executive meeting with the board of control which is made up of provincial chairpersons, affiliates to TZ such as wheelchair tennis and schools presenting their reports on developments in their respective provinces.
TZ administrator, Cliff Nhokwara, said chairpersons from the various provinces will be presenting their reports for the period from January to July and, hopefully, map the way forward as they seek to promote the development of the sport in the country.
“It’s a normal meeting in line with the constitution that we have meetings regularly, every quarter. After a new team that was selected in June, we have to meet and have a look at what has been happening in provinces.
“The board of control is a union of provincial chairpersons and they have to present their reports on their provinces’ development. It’s mostly focusing on development and maybe coming up with strategies for next year,” said Nhokwara.
TZ held their elections in June which ushered in a new executive led by former vice president, Regis Bhunu, and he said the national association wants to embark on a building programme to increase the number of juniors in competitions.
Meanwhile, seven junior players left the country on Wednesday for Namibia to take part in the International Tennis Federation South/Central Africa Junior Circuit Under-18 running from September 2 to 7 as they seek to get points to improve their rankings.
Zimbabwe held two legs of the same tournament last month and only Courtney Lock managed to reach the singles semi-finals in the first leg and won the doubles title in both legs with his partner, Lloyd Harris, in the boys section.
In the girls category, Nicole Dzenga reached the singles finals in the second leg and went on to clinch the doubles title when she partnered Theresa Van Zyl of South Africa as most of the players were eliminated in the early rounds.
The limelight will be on Dzenga as she hopes to continue with her good run.
The other players are Taremeredzwa Mariga, Alwyn Mushonga, Tonderai Tapfuma, Botswana-based Tanaka Chakanyuka, Keren Muswere and Rufaro Chirewa.
