A UK-based Zimbabwean nurse trained at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital, Tinotenda Manyere, is giving back to her home country by providing specialised fertility training to healthcare workers at the institution.
Manyere works at Cambridge University Hospital’s Fertility Clinic, where she has gained extensive expertise in infertility treatment.
With support from Cambridge IVF, she has organised a series of training sessions at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital, equipping nearly 42 healthcare workers, including general nurses, midwives and doctors, with essential skills in fertility management.
“My mission is to empower healthcare professionals at Sally Mugabe and Parirenyatwa (Group of) Hospitals with the knowledge to manage infertility, a condition often overlooked in Zimbabwe due to its high costs and limited resources,” said Manyere.
The training sessions, held in December 2024, included a dedicated workshop for nurses and midwives on December 11, followed by a session for doctors on December 12.
Manyere, who says she is inspired by the good works of First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa, underscored that the initiative seeks to address the shortage of fertility specialists in Government hospitals, where limited expertise and resources have restricted access to infertility care.
To provide consistent support for those struggling with infertility, the hospital has now scheduled fertility services every Wednesday.
“We launched the Fertility Clinic on December 13, and within just two days, around 52 patients came seeking treatment,” she said.
The training programme also received support from Cambridge IVF senior fertility experts, including Dr Jane MacDougall.
Manyere’s efforts mark a significant step toward improving fertility care in Zimbabwe, bridging the gap between international expertise and local healthcare needs.
