UMAHLEKISA Comedy Club has sealed a deal with Cresta Churchill Hotel which will see them providing entertainment for guests, beginning this month. The comedy club will stage its first show at the hotel on January 31 with comedians, Lady D, Keith Nkosi, Ntando Van Moyo and Long John among others billed to perform.

From next month, they will perform there every second Saturday of each month with guests expected to pay $5.

Umahlekisa director Ntando Van Moyo said their usual last Friday of each month performances at Rainbow Cinemas would go on as planned.

“Cresta is a new venue that we’re introducing to a pre-existing night. This doesn’t mean that we’re doing away with our traditional venue – Rainbow cinemas as it is still our venue for the comedy club,” Moyo said.

He however said the comedy club would not be able to perform at the Rainbow this month but would hold the first show there next month.

Moyo said the latest venue addition showed that the corporate world was slowly appreciating comedy.

“Cresta approached us to provide entertainment for their residents during the night showing that we’re doing something good. We shall continue in the same vein,” he said.

The Umahlekisa Comedy Nights were founded by comedians Moyo and Clive Chigubu two years ago. This was after realisation that stand up comedy was growing in Harare with nothing being done in Bulawayo yet the city has produced great comedians. Appreciation of the shows in Bulawayo has significantly grown in the recent months, motivating young comics to line up more shows.
