Umguza farmers urged to invest in own inputs

COMMUNAL farmers in Umguza District, Matabeleland North, have been urged to reduce over-reliance on Government input support programmes and take a more proactive role in sourcing their own agricultural inputs.

Speaking at a field day held at the homestead of Mr Amen Zhou and Ms Sophia Chihama in Village 7B, Ward Six, Umguza Peri East Agritex supervisor Mrs Siphiwe Ndebele said while Government assistance remains important, long-term sustainability in farming depends on farmers taking responsibility for financing their operations.

She encouraged farmers to adopt a business-oriented approach by planning ahead and investing in inputs such as seed, fertiliser and chemicals.

“We are fortunate to have a Government that listens, but input assistance must not be the only source of agricultural inputs. Let us take the initiative to source our own inputs since we have the land,” said Mrs Ndebele.

Mr Zhou, who has planted maize on six plots and expects a yield of more than a tonne, said he sourced most of his inputs independently, with Government support complementing his efforts.

“I did receive inputs from the Government but I had already sourced on my own. I had to take the initiative as a farmer before assistance came,” he said.

The field day, held under the theme “Right timing, right variety, right management: The Intwasa advantage in maize production,” attracted farmers, extension officers and other stakeholders.

Ward Six Agritex officer Mrs Boitumelo Ngwenya said such field days remain key in agricultural extension services as they provide hands-on learning opportunities.

“Through live demonstrations, farmers gain insights into planting times, seed selection, soil management and pest control. These platforms are vital as farmers adapt to changing weather patterns,” she said.
