ZIMBABWE’S election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council is a phenomenal diplomatic victory and a clear endorsement of the country’s commitment to multilateral cooperation, Presidential adviser, Paul Tungwarara has said.
Zimbabwe secured 182 out of 190 votes during elections held at the United Nations headquarters, earning a seat on the powerful global body responsible for maintaining international peace and security.
In a congratulatory message to President Mnangagwa, Dr Tungwarara said the overwhelming support received by Zimbabwe reflects growing international confidence in the country’s leadership and foreign policy direction.
The country was represented during the election by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister, Professor Amon Murwira.
“Huge congratulations to President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa and the entire nation of Zimbabwe on a resounding election to the United Nations Security Council as a non-permanent member. Securing a massive 182 out of 190 votes is a phenomenal diplomatic victory,” said Dr Tungwarara in a post on his X account.
He said the outcome was a strong affirmation of the success of the Government’s Engagement and Re-engagement policy, which seeks to strengthen Zimbabwe’s relations with the international community.
“It stands as a powerful testament to the success of the Engagement and Re-engagement agenda, proving that the global community has immense confidence in Zimbabwe’s leadership and vision for international peace,” he said.
Dr Tungwarara said Zimbabwe’s election presents an opportunity for the country to play a greater role in shaping international affairs while advancing the interests of Africa on the global stage.
“Zimbabwe is now strategically positioned to champion a fairer global order and elevate Africa’s voice on the world stage,” he said.
He added that the Security Council seat reinforces Zimbabwe’s growing influence in international diplomacy and demonstrates that the country is increasingly becoming a key player in global peace and security matters.
“This seat reinforces that Zimbabwe is not just open for business, but is now a pivotal player in shaping global peace and security. As Zimbabwe takes its rightful seat on the global stage, the journey towards Vision 2030 gains even greater momentum. Cheers to the diplomatic team and the entire nation for this outstanding achievement,” said Dr Tungwarara.
