CHINA has congratulated Zimbabwe on its election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), describing the development as recognition of the country’s contribution to global peace, multilateralism and sustainable development.
In a message posted on its official X account, the Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe hailed Zimbabwe’s successful bid for a seat on the 15-member council, where it will serve a two-year term beginning January 1, 2027.
“Warmest CONGRATULATIONS to Zimbabwe on its election to the United Nations Security Council as a non-permanent member!
This outcome duly acknowledges Zimbabwe’s valuable contributions to advancing global peace, multilateralism and sustainable development.
China looks forward to deepening cooperation with Zimbabwe both within the UNSC framework and across broader fields.”
Zimbabwe secured the seat following elections held at the United Nations headquarters, becoming one of five countries elected to serve as non-permanent members of the Security Council.
China and Zimbabwe have maintained close diplomatic ties over the years, with cooperation spanning infrastructure development, trade, mining, agriculture and international affairs.
Zimbabwe’s election to the Security Council has been widely viewed as a significant diplomatic achievement that will provide the country with an opportunity to contribute to discussions and decisions on international peace and security.
The Security Council bears primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security and is empowered to adopt resolutions, impose sanctions and authorise peacekeeping missions and other interventions aimed at resolving conflicts.
