Under-9s slant earns respect

FOLLOWING the Timothy ‘Sicho’ Masachi and Tawanda ‘Sebo’ Mapara’s Under 9 age group football initiative, stakeholders have applauded the idea as a move in the right direction for the development of talent in Manicaland.
In Sunday’s well attended Under 9s tournament that was organised and funded by Mapara, under the Takunda Mapara Foundation, Chikanga outfit Reactors emerged champions after edging Sporting Athletico by a solitary goal.
South African based James Lunga Meya, an enthusiast of the game and ardeht follower of teams that trace their roots to his hometown of Mutare, said: “It is powerful that you’re thinking long-term about talent development in Mutare, Under-9 tournaments are actually one of the strongest foundations for sustainable football growth if structured properly.
“Mutare has always had raw talent and what is often missing is structured pathways. Under-9 tournaments matter because at that age (7–9 years) players develop coordination, balance, and confidence. They learn teamwork and discipline early.
“Coaches can shape technical fundamentals (first touch, passing, movement). It builds a healthy football culture before ego and external pressure set in. If done correctly, these tournaments are not about trophies. They are about exposure and development.”
Meya said he feels he has a role to play to augument efforts by Masachi and Mapara.
“Under 9 tournaments are emerging now in Mutare, this is the right time to position yourself strategically — not just as a supporter, but as a builder.
“Going forward, personally, I feel I could contribute in three strategic ways that include help formalize tournament structure (rules, age verification, fair play standards) as well as promote certified coaching involvement. I can also assist in encouraging education-first messaging (school and sport balance). This I can achieve through my links with Hardrock FC and AmaZulu FC,” he said.
