Before we set ourselves in any path in life it is absolutely critical that we put ourselves in proper perspective of that which we intend to engage ourselves into.
Often enough we make premature entries into engagements, arrive at decisions and commitments based on unverified facts and exaggerated assurances without the necessary reality check.
The environment we now find ourselves in has become so complex that it demands we develop a bird’s eye view on every issue we come across and have a deep understanding of matters that we intend to involve ourselves in.
Looking at the current youth empowerment drive in our local economy, young people certainly have to develop an understanding of where the country is coming from economically to appreciate why we are where we are and where we are going.
Without this bird’s eye view and deep understanding of our current Zimbabwean situation looking for youth empowerment can be a nightmare for an average young
Zimbabwean. Before starting to make baseless allegations, misdirected finger-pointing and premature rejections of empowerment policies, there is need to understand the matrix, premise and bedrock by which these empowerment policies stretch out.
As young people we need to interrogate the actual DNA of these empowerment policies and evaluate the players involved and the roles each partner is taking in the implementation process.
If we look closely at the Youth Fund, the responsible ministry and the Zimbabwe Youth Council is there to facilitate an agreement that will bring forth co-operation from a bank or an institution to commit itself to a fund that can be devoted to the support of young people.
By now the major work of Government is done, the Fund is launched and rolled out then we begin to experience challenges.
Government is still there to offer support and to ensure that young people are represented through the Zimbabwe Youth Council, but whose turn is it now to directly fulfill the other half of the obligation?
Whose role is it now to administer the financial allocation to bankable micro-business initiatives?
Apart from focusing on bankers and financial institutions on their processes of evaluating and eventually disbursing the empowerment packages, in the mean time, what are you the individual expected to be empowered doing to ensure that you create a money-making environment around you?
The empowerment process doesn’t only involve Government but also includes private institutions, the macro-economic environment and the targeted recipients of the fund.
Each player in this process plays a key role but often when something doesn’t go according to plan there is a popular tendency to blame the Government and its partners.
Well, it is now high time we look closely on matters and ask ourselves twice is it really the Government? More often than we actually realise, noble efforts by government to empower its own people are hurriedly shot down for political reasons.
There are political animals out there whose opinion concerning policies that benefit locals is always an outright no vote of confidence before even facts are revealed.
So to be successful by all means evaluate the environment, plan, get the correct information from the right people, drive yourself towards your intended objective.
When you face challenges adjust your plan, push some more and throw in some weight to your proposal.
Pursue and be excited and motivated to participate and benefit from the process.
