AT least 140 voluntary child care workers (VCCWs) from Makonde district today received bicycles in Chinhoyi courtesy of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
The bicycles were handed over by the provincial social development officer Mrs Agnes Mutowo who commended the workers for championing vulnerable children’s rights.
She called on the volunteers to safeguard the bicycles and use them for work-related purposes.
“Voluntary care workers in all the seven districts across the province are expected to receive bicycles. These will ease their movements as they attend to vulnerable children in their respective wards,” she said.
Of the 141 voluntary care workers that received the bicycles today, the majority were women above 50 years of age. Every worker in all the 34 wards in the district including 15 in Chinhoyi municipality received the bicycles.
Mrs Daisy Honye (60) a beneficiary from Nyamugomba in Ward Six, said she covers at least 34 kilometres to attend to children and the donation would ease her movements.
Another beneficiary, Ward 14’s Mrs Grace Madziva (52) said voluntary care workers were facing difficulties in attending to all children due to transport challenges.
