Unicef hosts Tuku’s 60th birthday party

Tuku — as Mtukudzi is affectionately known by his legion of fans — proved that he was indeed the centre of attraction when he performed together with the children some of his hit songs that include Tozeza Baba, Perekedza Mwana and Chimbambaira Chiri Mupoto.
Speaking at the occasion, Tuku, commended his family, friends and fans for the support.
The “birthday boy” said he was overwhelmed by the performances by the children.
“I have never had a birthday with so many children around and this is my first one where I have sat done and enjoyed their performance as well,” said Tuku.
“I am humbled by your presence here to join me in celebrating my 60th birthday; it is not easy to get to this age.”
As Unicef regional goodwill ambassador, Tuku urged the children to play a pivotal role in developing the nation as the next generation.
“I would like to see some of you become ambassadors of the next generation. Continue living your dream,” he said.
The musician expressed concern over the abuse of children and called for adults to play their role in the protection of child-ren.
“Men are to blame for the abuse of teenagers than women. We should respect the rights of the children for the betterment of our country as they are the leaders of tomorrow,” said Tuku.
Unicef representative Dr Gianni Murzi said the musician played a vital role in the society.
“Tuku is a role model to many especially the children of African continent. Unicef will continue supporting the musician,” he said.
The representative later challenged fellow musicians to emulate what Tuku has done.
Later, the “birthday boy” was presented with a khaki waistcoat and T-shirt with a Unicef logo while Africaid gave him an artistic model of a man holding a guitar made from bottle tops.
