Fabregas came through the Spanish club’s La Masia academy before Arsenal signed him as a 16-year-old in 2003.
He developed as one of the London club’s key players under manager Arsene Wenger before becoming Arsenal captain in November 2008. The Spanish international spent eight years with the Gunners, playing 303 games and scoring 57 goals. However, he returned to the Nou Camp when he signed a five-year deal with Barcelona in a £25.4m move in August 2011.
He has since helped the Catalan club win the Copa del Rey in 2011-12 and La Liga in 2012-13.
Fabregas has played 96 times in two seasons with Barcelona, including 60 league games, but has rarely featured in his preferred midfield role, with Xavi, 33, and Andres Iniesta, 29, ahead of him in the Nou Camp outfit’s pecking order.
On the international front, Fabregas has played 83 times for Spain, winning the 2010 World Cup and European Championship twice.
The Press Association said that an offer had been submitted for the player, who came through Barcelona’s youth academy before joining Arsenal as a 16-year-old in 2003.
Sky Sports News, however, said a potential stumbling block could be a clause in Fabregas’ contract that Arsenal have first refusal should he decide to leave the Camp Nou.
Barcelona said they had no comment to make when contacted by AFP. If completed the Fabregas move would represent new manager David Moyes’ first major signing since the former Everton boss succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson during the close season.
United, who are currently on a pre-season tour of Asia, have the cash to allow Moyes to chase “a stellar player” before the start of the upcoming season, the club’s chief executive Ed Woodward was quoted as telling British media on Sunday.
Since then he has helped the Catalan giants claim the Copa del Rey in 2011-2012 and La Liga in 2012-13.
Meanwhile, Wenger has inserted too many clauses in the Fabregas deal which even Barca didn’t care in the beginning…
1) First Refusal: Arsenal can reject any bid made on Fabregas by any other Club
2) Buy Back Clause: Arsenal has a buy back clause at £25m if Cesc Fabregas wants to leave Barca. Barca will be helpless in this case if Arsenal and Fabregas reach an agreement
3) 50% sell on clause: If Fabregas wants to go to an another club then Arsenal will get 50% of the fee he is sold( If they sell him for £35m, then £17.5m for Barca & £17.5m for Arsenal)
Now Barcelona bought him for £35m. SSN says the third option is happening. But to get at least sum profit Barcelona have to sell him for £70m to get back the £35m and Arsenal will get the remaining £35m. United will never offer more than 40m for Fabregas. — AFP.
