A COMMUNITY in Kensington has taken development into its own hands, literally!

With no big government hand-outs or flashy donors, residents have teamed up to build classroom blocks for their children learning at Mvutho Primary School, repairing crumbling roads, and even encouraging fellow villagers to dip their cattle to fight deadly tick-borne diseases.

“We are motivated by our Presidents’ mantra Ilizwe Lakhiwa Ngabanikaz balo” said Councillor Bransi Mpofu, the project coordinator. “So we picked up our tools and started working for ourselves.”

Local businesspeople are contributing by buying cement for building the classroom while other residents are helping the Umguza Rural District Council to offload the material when it arrives. The new school blocks mean learners no longer study under trees, exposed to the sun and rain. The council chipped in with building material for the classroom.

“My child will now learn in a proper classroom with a blackboard and windows,” said a proud parent. “It’s a dream come true.”

Meanwhile, Suzzaine Road is slowly being patched up by community volunteers, who contributed fuel, motivated by the president’s mantra. The RDC provided heavy machinery like graders.
On the farming side, Cllr Mpofu is promoting regular cattle dipping to reduce disease outbreaks. “Losing cows to disease hurts families financially,” said the Councillor during an interview with Bmetro. “Now we remind each other dip day is a must!” The community also chipped in to buy a generator to pump water inside the dip tank.
