AN unlicensed Harare policeman who crashed a commuter omnibus and injured five passengers has been jailed for six months. The policeman will also pay a fine of $800 for negligent driving.

Noel Muzenda was convicted of negligent driving and driving without a driver’s licence.

Harare magistrate Mr Arnold Maburo sentenced Muzenda to an effective six months imprisonment for driving without a licence.

For negligent driving, Muzenda was ordered to pay a fine of $800 or spend another six months in prison.

The prosecutor Mr Oscar Madhume told the court that on May 27 around 9pm, the Chikurubi Training Depot-based policeman drove a Toyota Hiace which he had taken from Francis Majurivevu.

He was in police uniform.

The commuter omnibus was carrying 18 passengers heading to Mabvuku and Muzenda was driving due east along Robert Mugabe Road.

He failed to control the vehicle which veered off the road and overturned, injuring five passengers.

The injured passengers were rushed to Parirenyatwa Hospital.
